From Ferdinand von Mueller to F. A. Miller   [Aug 1874]

[I have just received from the public-spirited Baron Ferd. von Mueller, Curator of the Botanical Gardens of Melbourne,1 Australia, his interesting pamphlet Additions to the Lists of the Principal Timber-Trees and other Select Plants readily eligible for Victorian industrial culture.2]

M had been dismissed from the directorship of the Gardens a year earlier, and his official title was Government Botanist; see C. Hodgkinson to M, 31 May 1873; and Cohn & Maroske (1996).

Letter not found. The text given here is from 'A public benefactor', a letter dated November 1874 from Miller to the editor of the California horticulturist and floral magazine, vol.4, p. 352. Miller in his letter praised M for his efforts in relation to acclimatization, stressing the importance of his plant introductions to California and the rest of the world.
