Shire Hall, Hovell's Creek,
August 10th 1874.
The Baron F. von Mueller M.D.
Government Botanist,
Melbourne.
Sir
I have the honor by direction of the Corio Shire Council to forward to you herewith accompanying specimen of plant which is supposed to have caused the death of a number of young cattle lately on the You Yangs Farmers Common.1
I am to mention that cattle which have been depasturing on the Common for a length of time appear not to be in any way affected by eating the plant but only those admitted thereon within the past three months.
The Council desire respectfully to request that you will be pleased to furnish report at your earliest convenience as to the nature of the plant in question for their information.
I have the honor to be
Sir,
Your most Obedient Servant,
James Blair
Shire Secty
P.S. I may further point out that the pasture on the Common has been very short since winter set in.
J.B.
