From James Agnew to Ferdinand von Mueller   7 Sep 1874

Royal Society of Tasmania

Sept 7th 1874

My dear Baron,

In your very valuable "Contributions to the Phytography of Tasmania1 at P. 68 of our Monthly Notices for 1873 the Cyathea affinis is mentioned.

In reference to this Mr Stephens2 is anxious to bring under your kindly notice that the fern tree described by Dr Scott in his paper (Monthly Notices for 1872 p. 50)3 as found by him near Pt Esperance on the South Coast is supposed to be an Alsophila. The only locality in which a Cyathea has been found is near Circular Head on the North Coast where it was seen by Mr Stephens in February 1872. The circumstance of its occurrence was mentioned in a notice read by him at a meeting of the Royal Society in July 1872 — see Monthly Notices for 1872 p. 25.4

With kind regards

Believe me my dear Baron

Very sincerely yours,

J. W. Agnew
