Stets Ihr dankbarer

Ferd von Mueller

Melbourne,

6/10/ 74

With this month's mail, noble friend, I have sent you a copy of Mr Giles's travel diary,2 as Mount Olga is described in more detail in it and there are also other things in it that might interest you.3

I have recently sent you quite a bit; but the disruptions in my department are still causing so much delay and loss of time that I am quite unable to do you justice. However, I am not forgetting you.

I hope to send you soon a lot of materials from New Guinea. Does Dr Klunzinger or Count Castelnau have priority with the fishes.4 The work of the former appears to exceed greatly that of the Count as far as scientific accuracy is concerned. But I believe, that the latter did not have adequate literary reference works at his disposal.

Always your grateful

Ferd. von Mueller.

Above the sketch, M wrote ‘Mount Olga’; beside the highest peak in the sketch, he wrote ‘1500' über der Ebene, obern 3000' über dem Meerspiegel' [1500 feet above the plain, more than 3000 feet above sea level], and beside the right-hand adjoining, lower peak, '900' [900 feet].

E. Giles (1874); descriptions of other features and comparisons with Mt Olga (now Kata Tjuta) occur throughout.
