From Ferdinand von Mueller to Eduard Strasburger   23 Mar 1875

Melbourne,

23./3/75.

I was very pleasantly surprised, noble friend, when last month's mail brought me not only your kind letter,1 but also the diploma signed with the Grand Duke's hand and the magnificent jewel of the Order.2 I have expressed my deeply felt gratitude to His Royal Highness through the Chancellor,3 and now remains only my duty to express my sense of gratitude to you as the originator of this high and unexpected distinction. May it be in my power to prove myself truly grateful to you. I very much regret that Gnetum is not available to me here fresh either in flower or in fruit. I have asked the excellent S. Kurz4 in Calcutta to send you the necessary material in alcohol. Your important work will help to assign the true systematic position to those families that are grouped, so contrary to nature, in the Apetalae by Jussieu and in the Monochlamydeae by DC.

Kurz will also be able to help in supplying the material for Cycas.

If I remember correctly, before I knew of your fine work Professor Hegelmaier received Azolla pinnata as well as A. rubra. Here — so far south — only the latter is found. I shall be happy to send you Azolla pinnata at the first opportunity; my attempts to send living plants in fruit to Europe have all been in vain so far.

The developmental stages of the flower and fruit of Nuytsia could easily be obtained, and I have taken the necessary steps to this end.

Wishing you and your fine work even further success, and prepared to be of service to you as far as is in my power, I remain your

Ferd. von Mueller.
