William Gillbee M. R. C. S. Eng.
Dear Sir
We, members of the Medical Profession in Victoria, assure you of our deep regret, that, in the recent Election of the Honorary Staff of the Melbourne Hospital, you were not included in the List of Surgeons.
We regard this result as a misfortune to the Institution with which, during nearly twenty-two years, you were continuously associated, and it is certainly a painful surprise to the profession in which you have always held so honourable a place, for the Hospital owes much of its present position and usefulness to your efforts, and the true interests of our calling have always found in you an unvarying advocate.
We trust the disappointment you must naturally feel, will find its counterbalance in the continued confidence and esteem of those who practise, with you, a common vocation throughout the Australian Colonies.
With the sincerest regret,
We are,
Dear Sir,
Faithfully yours,

It is not known why Gray signed here and also on the following separate sheet; the text after his signature here is illegible.

MS is a lavishly illustrated illuminated address. On the front leather cover is inscribed ‘To William Gillbee Esq. M.R.C.S. Eng. from His Professional Brethren. September 1875.’ One page is devoted to 30 small oval photographs; M’s picture is in the top centre. For a report of the presentation to Gillbee and an explanation of the context, see 'Address to Mr. Gillbee', Argus, 27 September 1875, p. 6. The report noted that 'with the address were the portraits of a number of his friends who had taken an interest in the movement'. In addition to the illuminated address, Gillbee was presented with a 'silver mounted claret jug'.
