From Ferdinand von Mueller to James McCulloch   [Mar 1876]

[From the Treasury, Melbourne, a letter was read from Sir James M'Culloch's secretary, stating that a package of seeds of Ulex Europoeus1 and Acaria Armata2 had been forwarded to the Government by Baron Von Mueller, with a suggestion that the seeds should be transmitted to Warrnambool, in order that they might be scattered over the drifting coast sands, to help to bind them. The package had been forwarded to be dealt with by the Council. Dr. Mueller stated in his letter3 that the shrubs were so prickly that cattle, sheep or goats cannot well destroy them and that they thrive in moving sand; also, that as the hottest weather has now passed, the sowing might be advantageously effected.]

Acaria Armata

Ulex Europoeus

Typesetters or clerk's error for Ulex europaeus?

Typesetters or clerk's error for Acacia armata?

Presumably the letter received by the council enclosed, or summarized, M's letter to McCulloch.

Letter not found. The text given here is from a report in the Warrnambool standard, 10 March 1876, p. 2, of a meeting of the Warrnambool Borough Council held on 7 March 1876. The item is headed 'Sand Hummocks'. The letter is dated to the beginning of March 1876 as the latest it could have been written, to be forwarded to the Council in time for the meeting.
