Cher Commandeur & Confrere

Dear Commander and colleague,

Allow me to ask you whether it would be possible for me to obtain some of Dr Beccari's plants, whether by exchange or by purchase, with the aim of contributing to their elaboration, without interfering in the parts of the elucidation that you and your Italian collaborators may wish to undertake. It is natural that I take a great deal of interest in the vegetation of insular India, having made extensive explorations in tropical Australia, above all in the alpine parts;1 the Australian types would interest me greatly, the more so since having examined the alpine vegetation of Australia in 1853, 1854 & 1855, I should like to establish a comparison. A new sending of plants for the Museum will be despatched shortly to your noble institutions, as well as some new publications.

With deepest respect, and assuring you how much I lament the loss of our illustrious friend Brogniart,2 accept, dear Professor, my warmest greetings.
