To Cosmo Newbery   22 May 1876

Melbourne

22/5/76.

Herewith, dear Mr Newbery, I send you back the specimen of clay containing fossil leaves. I would advise, that drawings should be made of these impressions, so as to be ready for publication, when at any time connectedly fruits and leaves, such as these, are found. More than a dozen fossil plants are now known, so far as their fruits are concerned, from deposits like these. Hence it would be unsafe to refer the leaves to any one of these described genera and species from the material at present before us.

With best respects

Ferd. von Mueller

I would suggest to encourage Mr Schell in further collecting.
