From Ferdinand von Mueller to Julius von Haast   1 Aug 1876

1/8/76

I am very sorry to hear, best of friends, that you have been so ill. A heavy bronchial catarrh, which in the case of hereditary predisposition to phthisis is always very serious for me, cast me on the sick bed too. I am still also almost chained to the room and by no means quite out of danger and have not, like you, a loving creature who can care for you on the sick bed. Let me hope that you have quite recovered; your constitution is certainly strong and good.

I received my specimen of Apteryx haastii from Mr Ulrich,1 who is the secretary of the public library in Hokitiki.2

Until now I have heard nothing of the printing of my Industrial plants3 in a New Zealand edition. I fear that envy and jealousy perhaps stand in the way of fulfillment; such — if I think at all correctly — proceeds but not from Dr Hector; for me the matter would have been a great "support".

Do search very carefully again for the fruits of the Donatia, and kindly inform me whether the stamen or the pistil are in any way sensitive. Among fresh water plants, especially the small duckweed, something new ought still to be found there. Herewith the Leeuvenhoekia,4 of which species I found a specimen among your plants.

With best wishes to you and your wife

Ferd. von Mueller
