To Joseph Hooker1    20 August 1876

20/8/76

It may interest you, dear Dr Hooker, that a second species of your genus Adenochilus has been discovered by Mr J Norton, on a cataract in the Blue Mountains of N.S. Wales, very near to A. gracilis. It is beautifully figured by Mr Fitzgerald for the second part of his "Austr. Orchid2

Have you a spare specimen of the N.Z. species, so that I can institute an exact comparison.

Regardfully

Ferd. von Mueller.

Adenochilus gracilis

MS annotation: 'And'. Letter not found.
Adenochilus nortoni was described and illustrated in Fitzgerald (1875-94), vol. 1, part 2 (publ. 1876), plate 2, and discussed by M in B76.04.03, p. 64. In his account, M says that he has not seen a specimen of A. gracilis but has accepted the distinction between the two species on the basis of Fitch's illustration of this.
