From Ferdinand von Mueller to George Engelmann   10 May 1877

Melbourne, 10/5/77

Melbourne, 10/5/77

It was very kind of you, esteemed Doctor, to take the time with Dr Barroeta2 regarding information about industrial plants of Mexico. Therefore I have then also turned directly to him. I was very pleased with your photograph and have given it a prominent place in my album.3 Kindly also accept my small picture as a souvenir.

Last week in the book trade I acquired the volumes of the surveys that also contain your excellent treatises about cacti4 and so on. More than a dozen years ago Dr Asa Gray sent me the seeds of Cereus giganteus, from which I grew magnificent plants for my greenhouses.

What delightful plants you do have in the United States, especially on the Western plains. The volume about the plants of California5 must inspire every expert.

I can never see enough of your beautiful and noble trees. Through me more North American trees (especially conifers) exist around Melbourne than Australian.

I shall regard the continuation of your correspondence as a source of pleasure.

Your devoted,

Ferd von Mueller

See, for example, Engelmann (1859a); details of his reports from other surveys are included in the bibliography by Sargent (1884) and they are reprinted in his collected papers (Englemann (1887)). None of the survey reports containing accounts by Engelmann remain in the Library at MEL.
