To William Odgers   7 September 1877

From the appended letter,1 adressed to me, the hon. the Chief Secretary will observe, that this application arose solely from the proprietors of the Sydney Morning Herald, who purchased a copy of the School Book. I feel sure, that the hon. the Chief Secretary will favorably consider this application, as the reproduction of the little book will do credit to Victoria in the sister-colony, will cost us nothing and promote our knowledge elsewhere. It will perhaps be for the professional advise of the Gov Printer to say, whether the woodblocks should be sent over on loan, which could be done successively by post, and which seems to me the simplest plan, or whether the process of electrotyping should be adopted.2

See J. Fairfax & Sons to M, 21 August 1877.
M's note was sent on 10 September to the Government Printer who replied the next day, opposing the proposed reprinting. J. Fairfax & Sons were, however, in due course granted permission to reproduce M's work in the Sydney mail; see W. Odgers to J. Fairfax & Sons, 3 October 1877 (in this edition as M77-10-03).
