To Lord Arthur Russell   5 October 1877

On bord of the "Siam"1

5/10/77

Allow me, my Lord, to introduce to you the generous supporter of the geographic enterprises of Colonel Warburton and of the two last expeditions of Mr Giles. The hon. Th. Elder is on a visit to his native country, and I feel sure, he will regard it an honor to be introduced to the Royal Geographic Society by your Lordship,2 while the great British forum of geographic research will doubtless recognize the generosity of this excellent man, who rendered known by his private means most extensive tracts of the Australian Continent, and who is likely to promote still further geographic mapping after his return to his Australian Home.

Regardfully

your Ferd von Mueller
