From Ferdinand von Mueller to August Petermann   3 June 1878

3/6/78.

3/6/78

It will perhaps have not yet been known to you, noble Friend, that the brothers John & Alex. Forrest, in part on my recommendation, have recently begun an expedition from Nichol Bay1 to the Victoria River,2 well equipped by the Western Australian Government. This undertaking will now also soon open up this almost last unknown part of our continent for geography. I am obliged to you for several sendings from your valuable journal, which you forwarded to me from time to time.

With respect

Your

Ferd. von Mueller.

Nickol Bay, WA. The expedition was to survey the newly settled areas 'in the neighbourhood of the Murchison and Gascoigne rivers', Western Australian, 12 April 1878, p. 2; Victorian express (Geraldton, WA), 30 October 1878, p. 2.
