Mit dieser Monats-Post, edler Herr, habe ich die Ehre, Ihnen die englische Ausgabe von Wittsteins "Analyse von Pflanzentheilen auf ihre organischen Bestandtheile" vorzulegen, welche ich veranstaltete, mit Nachträge vergrösserte und Ihnen u Hr Dr Gladstone nun zu widmen wage. Lassen Sie mich hoffen, dass Sie als Grossmeister chemischer Wissenschaft auf diese Gabe aus Australien um so gütiger herabsehen werden, als das wirklich ausgezeichnete Originalwerk aus vieljährigen Forschungen eines deutschen Gelehrten entsprang.
Die jetzt übersandte Abdruck ist nur ein Probeband, da die letzten Zusätze noch nicht gedruckt sind, welche ein neues Alkaloid enthalten aus der Rinde von meiner Alstonia constricta, das mit den von Jobst u Hesse angegebenen Merkmale des Ditamin nicht übereinstimmt. Die Nachträge werden auch kurze Notizen liefern über das von mir bennante Duboisin (von Duboisia myoporoides RBr), welches aber vielleicht mit Staiger’s Piturin (von Duboisia Hopwoodii F.vM) übereinkommen mag.
Diese Übersetzung ist gänzlich mein Eigenthum; daher kann ich Ihnen (selbstverständlich frei) so viel Exemplare zu Gebot stellen, als Sie immer für wissenschaftliche Freunde zu erlangen wünschen. Hr Dr. W. Sonder, der theuerste meiner Freunde, ein wahrhaft edler Mensch, könnte in Hamburg die Übersendung vermitteln. Ein Exemplar ist mit dieser Post an Dr Gladstone und eins an Geheimrath Dove gesandt.
Mag die Wissenschaft Sie noch lange zum Wohl des Welt besitzen.

With this month's mail, noble Sir, I have the honour to submit to you the English edition of Wittstein's Analyse von Pflanzentheilen auf ihre organischen Bestandtheile,1 which I organised, enlarged with supplements and now venture to dedicate to you and Dr Gladstone.2 Allow me to hope that you as grand master of chemical science will look on this gift from Australia all the more kindly as the truly excellent original work arose from many years of research of a German savant.
The copy sent over now is only a pattern volume, since the last additions3 are not yet printed, that will contain a new alkaloid from the bark of my Alstonia constricta, that does not agree with the properties of Ditamin given by Jobst and Hesse. The supplements will also have short notes on Duboisin named by me (from Duboisia myoporoides RBr), but which perhaps may agree with Staiger's4 Piturin (from Duboisia hopwoodii F. v. M)
This translation is completely my property; therefore I can put at your disposal (free, of course) as many copies as you always wish to get for scientific friends. Dr W. Sonder, the dearest of my friends, a truly noble man, could arrange the sending in Hamburg. A copy is sent with this mail to Dr Gladstone and one to Privy Councillor Dove.5
