To James Hector   1 August 1878

1/8/781

Let me express my best thanks, dear Dr Hector, for the copy of vol. X of the New Zeal. Institute, issued under your able Editorship. Your islands will be soon the best scientifically known of the globe, thanks to well sustained & directed exertions there.

I am wanting vol VIII. Have I mislaid it, or did I not receive it? Remember kindly, that my library has mostly been stored away for 5 years, when I was in such a shameless manner deprived even of my House in the Garden. I have been ever homeless since! If you can kindly spare a copy of vol VIII, I shall be obliged. If I find mine, I will return the additional one. I am under the impression the Hon. Cockbourn Hood2 had the loan of it, when he was in Melbourne; but I may be wrong,3

Regardfully

Ferd. von Mueller

If any chasm in my publications possibly exists in the Institute Library — pray let me know.
