From Ferdinand von Mueller to [George] Day   11 Sep 1878

Melbourne

11/9/78.

I was pleasingly surprised, dear Mr Day,1 to receive your kind letter this morning.2 It was very kind of you, to think of me and my wishes of plants during your travels and business engagements.

The so called native orange-tree is Capparis Mitchelli3 of Professor Lindley.

Any collections of yours will be very valuable for my supplemental volumes of the Australian Flora.4

Capparis Mitchelli

Not identified. However, M is known to have been corresponding with George Porter Day at this period, and Day was sending him specimens; see G. Day to M, 25 January 1879, and G. Day to M, 6 March 1879.

Letter not found.

Capparis mitchellii?

Text finishes part-way down the sheet, without valediction; it thus appears that the letter was neither finished nor sent.

MS found with a specimen of Donatia novae-zelandiae (MEL 2469031), folded to make an envelope in which to store the specimen and inscribed on the verso: ‘Donatia Novae Zeelandia | Otago mountains | 1878 | Petrie’.
