From Ferdinand von Mueller to John Buchanan   15 Mar 1879

15/3/79.

Allow me to ask you, dear Mr Buchanan,1 whether you can spare me a perfect specimen of Rumex flexuosus. I have the plant only in an imperfect state from Prof Kirk2 with no ripe fruit, & like to see, whether R. dumosus of Australia is specifically distinct from it.

From the enclosed you will see, that Calostrophus can not be superseded by Hypolaena.3

Regardfully your

Ferd von Mueller

Enclosure not found but almost certainly B79.13.14, which was presented in November 1877 to the Royal Society of Tasmania; see p. 117 (where Calostrophus is misspelled as Calorophus).
