From Patrick O'Shanesy to Ferdinand von Mueller   17 July 1879

Cometville1 July 17 1879

Dear Baron Mueller

I have much pleasure in sending another small collection which may be interesting to you.

Thanks for the name of Persoonia falcata, which I took to be an Acacia

I enclose some ripe fruit of Eucalyptus n. 3016, which you say is E. crebra as far as you can make out without ripe fruit;2 it is quite distinct to that species. The bark on the lower part of the trunk is dark and persistent, and very often breaks up into small pieces (similar to that of E tesselaris), the bark on the upper part of trunk and branches is white and smooth. I enclose flowers of E. citriodora as requested, and a young shoot of shame,3 which is very apt to mislead.

New plants are now very rare but I may soon be going up to the neighborhood of the Drummond range4 where something interesting may be found.5

I am Dear Baron

Yours Sincerely

P. A. O'Shanesy

In the event, O'Shanesy found the Drummond Range very disappointing from a botanical point of view; see P. O'Shanesy to M, 20 May 1880 (in this edition as 80-05-20a).

MS found with a specimen of Eucalyptus leptophleba (MEL 1610557). MS annotation by M: 'Answ 31/7/79 FvM'. Letter not found.
