From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ferdinand von Krauss   16 Aug 1879

16/8/79.

Stets Ihr Sie Ehrender

Ferd. von Mueller

Your kind letter of 3 July,1 best of friends, is to hand for my answer. Let me hope that you have returned newly strengthened from your holiday journey during the pleasant weeks of the late summer.

Since then the large crocodile will have arrived at your place hopefully safe and sound; the smaller specimens were not so expensive.2

I'm glad that you have considered my native town with the surplus of your museum and I ask you to kindly continue in this way from my subsequent collections.3

I shall try to send you skins and skeletons of Nestor notabilis.4 You will have smiled about my ignorance of this bird; however, if you consider that our museum here is very incomplete and is situated so far from me that I have not been able to visit it for years, you would excuse my poor concept of New Zealand ornithology.

Unfortunately, when I studied in Kiel the Professor of Zoology, Dr Behn (recently President of the Leopoldina) was away with the Galatea,5 so that I never had the opportunity to go through a course of zoology.

I must have overlooked remarking that the seaweed used for packing was destined for the good Sonder, whose favourites are the algae. So he too does have something now and then for his versatile efforts in our mutual interest.

It is really pleasing for me to hear of the intended publication of some new animal forms through the scholarship of you and your colleagues.

Always your respectful

Ferd. von Mueller

The Kea from NZ.

M initially wrote 'Galathea', the correct spelling of the name of the ship that carried the Danish round-the-world scientific exploring expedition, 1845-8, but then crossed out the 'h'.

MS annotations by Krauss: 'empf. 28. Oct Rep. 13 . Dec.' [received 28 October. Replied 13 December] (letter not found), and 'd. 17 Nov. 79. 5 Ex. v Klz. Uebersicht über d. Fische unter Kreuzband geschickt' [17 November 1879. 5 examples of Klunzinger. Summary of the fishes sent by newspaper post]. See Klunzinger (1879).
