beehre ich mich in Kenntniss zu setzen dass S.K.H. der Grossherzog, mein Allergnädigsten Herr, geruht habe Ihnen das Ritterkreutz I Classe des Ordens vom Zähringer Löwen zu verleihen.

Indem ich die Ehre habe E. H. anliegend die Ordensinsignien nebst Statuten und Verleihungsurkunde zu übersenden benutze ich mit Vergnügen dieser Anlass zur Versicherung meiner vorzüglichsten Hochachtung.

I beg to inform your Honour that His Royal Highness the Grand Duke, my most gracious Lord, has been pleased to confer the Knight’s Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Zähringer Lion on you.

While I have the honour of transmitting the enclosed insignia of the order together with the statutes and certificate of investiture, I take advantage of this occasion with pleasure to assure you of my most distinguished respect.

Notwithstanding this draft valediction, it would appear that the letter that was sent was signed by Friedrich Hardeck, an official in the Foreign Affairs Section of the Ministry of State, since it was to him that M replied; see M to F. Hardeck, 12 December 1879 (in this edition as 79-12-12b).
