Es ist meine ehrenvolle Pflicht, den Empfang Ihrer Zuschrift vom 15 October dieses Jahres anzuerkennen, durch welche mir so unerwartet die Mittheilung wurde, dass Seine Königliche Hoheit, der Grossherzog von Baden, mich gnadenvoll zum Ritter erster Klasse des zähringer Löwen-Ordens ernannte. Diese hohe Auszeichnung vom Throne Ihres Landes erfüllt mich um so mehr mit Freude, als ich hier im fernen Auslande nur geringer Ansprüche an das herablassende Wohlwollen Ihres erhabenen Herrscher mir bewusst bin; und es ist für mich ein beglückendes Gefühl wahrzunehmen, dass in meinem Vaterlande auch Ihr gnädiger Grossherzog deutsche Bestrebungen für wissenschaftliche Forschungen selbst in den entlegensten Welt-Gegenden zu ermuntern wünscht.

Erlauben Sie mir, edler Herr, die Bitte Sr Königlichen Hoheit meine tiefsten Dank-Gefühle für die mir erwiesene Gunst ausdrücken zu wollen, mit der gleichzeitigen Versicherung, dass ich streben werde, so lange mir die göttliche Vorsehung meine Geisteskraft erhalten mag, für wissenschaftliche Forschungen weiter zu wirken und auch hier auf den Deutschen Namen mit Glanz zu werfen.

Sr Excellenz dem Herrn Minister-Presidenten sowie auch Ihnen, hochgeehrter Herr Legationsrath, bin ich zum besondere Danke verpflichtet für die von unserm würdigen Consul Herrn Brahe mir eingehändigte grossherzogliche Urkunde und das prächtige Ordens-Juwel, welches letzteres ich mit Stolz auf diese mir erwiesene Auszeichnung tragen werde.

His honour Embassy Privy Counsellor Hardeck &c &c

It is my honourable duty to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of 15 October of this year,¹ by which the information so unexpectedly came to me that His Royal Highness the Grand Duke of Baden graciously made me Knight, first class, of the Zähringer Lion. This high distinction from the throne of your country fills me all the more with joy, as here in the far distant foreign country I am concious only of slight claims on the condescending kind disposition of your noble ruler; and it is for me a happy feeling to see that in my fatherland even your gracious Grand Duke wishes to encourage German endeavours for scientific research even in the most remote regions of the world.

Permit me, noble Sir, the solicitation to express to his Royal Highness my deepest feelings of gratitude for the favour bestowed on me, with at the same time the assurance that I shall strive as long as Divine Providence may keep my mental power to work further for scientific researches and also to shed lustre here on the German name.

I am indebted particularly to His Excellency the Minister President and as well as to you, highly esteemed Embassy Counsellor, for the grand-ducal certificate and the magnificent jewel of the order delivered to me by our worthy Consul Brahe. I shall wear the latter with pride for this distinction shown to me.
