[Attention is being directed to the practicability of growing the cinchona bark tree in California. Professor Hilgard of the State University has repeatedly recommended its introduction, and it is stated that letters received from Baron von Mueller, of Melbourne, and Professor Hill, of the Brisbane Botanic Gardens,1 have expressed the opinion that California is well adapted to the cultivation of cinchona.]
i.e. Walter Hill, Superintendent of the Brisbane Botanic Garden.
Letter not found. The text given here is from 'American Agriculture', Leader, 3 April 1880, p. 7. Based on the text, the correspondent is identified as Hilgard, but see M to G. Englemann, 4 December 1880 (in this edition as 80-12-04a), which might suggest that M's correspondence with Hilgard had not begun at that stage.
