From Ferdinand von Mueller to Frederick Bailey   18 Feb 1880

18/2/80

Herewith, dear Mr Bailey, I send you from the "Grevillea" a reprint, concerning fungi, chiefly from poor Mons. Thozets & Mr OShanesy's collections.1 Should you have this print already, then please return it.

In the "Grevillea" of Dec. 1879 a number of Australian Fungi are mentioned along with Berggren's New Zealand species, but they are all from the vicinity of Port Phillip,2 and you require — if I remember rightly — only the QL.3 & N.S.W. species From Armits northern collection are named:

Polyporus Armitii Kalchbrenner. (the name, given by me, was preoccupied lately)

Hexagona erinigera, Fries

Podaxon pistillare, Fries

Lentinus subnudus Berk.

Stereum nitidulum Berk

Agaricus silenus B&B.

Xylaria hypoxylon, Fries4

Polyporus rimosus, Berkeley.

P. flavus, Junghuhn.

P. fulvus, Fries.

Stereum luteo-badium Fries.

Cladoderris australis Kalchbrenner

Puccinea straminis, Fuck.

P. Chondrillae, Corda.

Sorosporium Eriachenis7 Thuemen

Bispora monilioides Corda

Sporotrichum densum Link

Mr Robertson has not yet applied to me about your manuscript on ferns;8 if he does I will be happy to support your literary efforts, so far as my recommendations go; but with exception of one single lecture of mine, he has never undertaken the print of any works of mine.9

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller

Pastor Kalchbrenner has sent the msc of many more Fungi recently to Cooke

The Dicksonia from Frasers Island10 got among the unsorted (laid aside) accumulated additional collections. I have had lately no leisure to insert any; so it will take me some time to find it. I still believe that it it like the one from Bellenden Ker Mountains11 namely Dicksonia Youngiae (D. squarrosa var?)

Best thanks to Dr Bancroft for his kind offer of the bark of Alstonia; I will see to this & write further on the subjec[t.]12 It seems, that Mr Moore engaged a Mr Weber for his Museum lately;13 he is to me a stranger.

Each name in this list has been ticked in the margin.

Thümen (1878).

Each name in the list, to this point, except Hymenochaete rigidula Berkeley, has been ticked in the margin, presumably by Bailey.

S. eriachnei?

Presumably the work eventually published by Gordon & Gotch, not Robertson, as Bailey (1881).
