A leading geologic authority; Murchison-Medalist; Discovered, described and figured a very considerable number of extinct animals and added also many species to the recent Fauna, published partly in the Annals & Magazine of Natural history (since 1840) and partly in the following works: Synopsis of carboniferous fossils of Ireland, also of silurian fossils of Ireland, Contributions of British Palaeontology, Prodromus of palaeontology of Vict., Prodr. of zoology of Victoria; Coauthor with Prof. Sedgwick in the work on British palaeozoic rocks and fossils.

being desirous of admission into the ROYAL SOCIETY OF LONDON, we, the undersigned, propose and recommend him as deserving that honour, and as likely to become a useful and valuable Member. Dated this 4th day of March 1880
