From John Brown   16 April 1880

Forest Board Office,

Adelaide. 16/4/80.

Dear Sir Ferdinand

The enclosed specimen is from Wirrabara Forest.1 The tree grows from 12 to 16 ft. in height in long thin sticks not thicker than ones arm. The bark at base somewhat persistent but near the top it decorticates in long ribbons: the old bark is black and the new somewhat of a red colour. By the inhabitants the tree is called "Black Mallee" and "Peppermint Mallee"

Is it a variety of E. odorata.

Yours very truly

J. E. Brown
