Kürzlich, verehrter Freund, hat mir Mr Alex Forrest mitgetheilt, dass er meinem Wunsche entsprechen und Ihnen ein geographisches Denkmal in N O. Australien gesetzt habe, indem er einen 1800 Fuss hohen Berg (dort erheblich) nach Ihnen Mt Krauss nannte. Es muss eine schöne Landmarke sein, u. ich freue mich, dass Ihr berühmter Name nun nicht nur mit der Zoologie, sondern auch der Geographie des fünften Welttheils verknüpft ist.

Mit dieser Post sende ich Ihnen die noch dort fehlende ichthyologische Abhandlung des nun verstorbenen Grafen Castelnau. Ich war vor einigen Wochen einer seiner Sarg-Träger.

Die fertige Landkarte werden Sie im nächsten Monat bekommen. Ich denke mir, dass hier oder in London die grosse Kiste ins Wasser fiel, und dass man dies verhehlte, um nicht für Schaden-Ersatz verantwortlich zu werden! Wir dürfen deshalb den Muth nicht sinken lassen. Für mich ist es ein Geldverlust von nahe £30! der Mühe gar nicht zu gedenken. Fräulein Bromby ist hier wohlbehalten angekommen; ich habe Sie aber nur einmal gesehen.

Recently, respected friend, Mr Alex Forrest informed me that according to my request he has set up a geographical memorial for you in north east Australia, naming a 1800 foot high mountain (of consequence there) Mt Krauss after you.2 It must be a splendid landmark and I am pleased that your celebrated name is now coupled not only with the zoology but also with the geography of the fifth continent.

With this mail I am sending you the ichthyological paper still lacking there of the now deceased Count Castelnau.3 Some weeks ago I was one of his coffin bearers.4

You will get the complete map next month. I think that here or in London the large box fell into the water and that they concealed this in order not to become responsible for damage compensation! 5 We must not let our spirits drop. For me it is a monetary loss of nearly £30! not thinking at all of the trouble. Miss Bromby has arrived here safe and sound; 6 but I have only seen her once.

Since Forrest was exploring in the Kimberley district of WA, M presumably intended to write 'N. W.' [north west]. Mt Krauss is in lat. 18o20', long. 126o 07'.

Castelnau died on 4 February 1880. In the report in the Argus, 7 February 1880, p. 7, of his funeral, the only pallbearers noted were the consuls of Russia, Germany and France.
