To the Secretary, Linnean Society of London 1    26 July 1880

26/7/80

I have been asked, honored Sir, to forward to the Linnéan Society the byefollowing 4thplate of Lepidoptera, which completes the illustration of an essay on the Adelaide Butterflies, sent to the Society by Mr O. Tepper.2

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller3

Correspondent inferred from location and content. The salutation that M uses is very unlike the forms he used in earlier letters to the society's long-serving secretary, Richard Kippist, suggesting that he may have been aware that Kippist's post was being abolished (see Gage & Stearn [1988], p. 77) and that he needed to address the letter to somebody else.
In Tepper's letter to the Secretary of 19 June 1879 (Linnean Society, London, Archives, Guard books, 1880-85, f 11), with payment of part of his fees due on election as Fellow, he included ‘watercolour paintings of all South Australian Papilionidae mentioned in my paper on “Insects of S. Australia” with some short notes respecting their distribution in this region’. He added a marginal postscript: ‘uncontrollable circumstances have prevented me from completing figures 29–32. But they will be forwarded, if possible, next month.’
