Noch immer habe ich keine eingehende Untersuchung über Ihr Prasophyllum vornehmen können, lieber Herr Tepper, will es aber thun, wenn die Arbeiten für die Austellung vorüber sind. In den Monaten vorher war meine Nebenzeit für das Werk über die Euc. in Anspruch genommen, die Hauptzeit geht mit täglichen “Office” Arbeiten u Correspondenz dahin. Ich möchte gern das ganze Genus Prasophyllum im Zusammenhang durcharbeiten, da ich nicht mit der Auffassung der Arten von Bentham in allen Stücken übereinstimmen. Ihr Fund von Drymaria filiformis ist sehr merkwürdig.

Ich fand diese überhaupt selten Art nur einmal in Süd-Austr., nämlich nahe Mt Lofty vor etwa 30 Jahren. Hier möchte ich mir eine Bemerkung erlauben. Wenn immer es angeht, trocknen Sie einige aufgeöffnete separte Blumen in einem Stücken Papier für sich; es erleichtert die Benennung, u in manchen Fällen, wie bei dieser Thelymitra geht nach dem Macerigen der getrockneten Blumen die innere Structur doch nicht genau hervor, wie viel Zeit man auch an das mühsame Aufweichen u Präpariren verwenden mag.

Der II Theil der Flora von Victoria wird noch sobald nicht erscheinen. Die Legum u Myrtaceen sind für den Text bearbeitet u so Manches andern, aber einen Verleger kann ich nicht finden, u die Gouv. Druck Office ist überbürdet mit Arbeit zumal in diesem Austellungsjahr; übrigens sind die 60 Holzschnitte für den 2tn Theil fertig geworden, was etwa £200 gekostet hat! Sie sehen, ohne Geldmittel ist man gebunden, u ich glaube nicht, dass ein Dutzend Leute hier das Buch kauften u kaufen werden.

Südaustralien und die sämmtlichen andern Colonien haben mir nicht die geringste Geldhülfe gegeben (êntre nous), selbst nicht einmal für den Eucalylpten-Atlas trotz langer Correspondenz deswegen. Meine ganzen Privat-Mittel sind nach u nach in meinen literarischen Arbeiten zu Grunde gegangen, u Baron von Humboldt hat dieselben Opfer gebracht u wie ich auch Familien leben der Wissenschaft geopfert.

Sie werden jetzt noch zeitig genug dem Herrn Professor Tate Nachträge liefern können, ehe sein Census erscheint. Von Hydrocotyle rugulosa hätte ich noch gern einige Exemplare

Still I have not been able to carry out any thorough investigation on your Prasophyllum, dear Mr Tepper,² but will do it when the work for the exhibition ³ is over. In the months before my extra time was claimed for the work on the eucalypts,⁴ the principal time passed with daily "office" work and correspondence. I would very much like to work through the whole genus Prasophyllum in sequence, because I do not agree with the interpretation of species by Bentham in all respects. Your discovery of Drymaria filiformis is very remarkable.

I found this generally rare species only once in South Australia, namely near Mt Lofty about 30 years ago. Here I would like to permit myself a remark. Whenever possible, dry some opened separate flowers in a piece of paper separately; it makes the naming easier and in many cases, as in this Thelymitra, the inner structure does not come out exactly after the maceration of the dried flowers, however much time may be spent on the laborious soaking and preparation.

The II part of the Flora of Victoria will still not appear soon.⁵ The legumes and Myrtaceae are worked up for the text and so many others, but I cannot find a publisher and the Government Printing Office is overloaded with work especially in this exhibition year; by the way the 60 wood engravings for the second part have been completed, which has cost about £200! You see without funds one is constrained and I do not think that a dozen people here bought and will buy the book.

South Australia and all the other colonies have not given me the slightest monetary assistance (entre nous), not even for the eucalypt atlas despite long correspondence on that account. All my private funds have gradually been lost in my literary works, and Baron von Humboldt has made the same sacrifice and like me sacrificed even family life to science.

You will now still have time enough to be able to give supplements to Professor Tate before his census appears. I would very much still like to have some specimens of Hydrocotyle rugulosa.
