To the Marquis de Goyzueta, Italian Consul at Melbourne
I am very conscious of the honour his Excellency the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs has done me in connection with the suggestions I took it upon myself to make regarding the planting of pines in the insalubrious regions near the metropolis of your great Kingdom.
I take the liberty of sending some seeds of Eucalyptus Amigdalina2 that could produce thousands of plants and in a few weeks I shall send an equal quantity of the variety "regnans" that will be coming from the mountains, that variety being perhaps better adapted for the unhealthy regions; it also constitutes the most gigantic trees of Australia.
I am happy to make this sendings to you without cost. One cannot at present obtain seeds of the very rare Eucalyptus corrifera.3
I shall try to obain seeds of the best resinous pines of North America with the help of my scientific friends so that trial plantings can be instituted with these important species, if his Excellency wishes to permit it.
I am always very happy to carry out what you judge appropriate and I remain, dear Marquis
