Dear Baron
I herewith send you a piece of some proteaceous plant, new to me, which I should be glad to know the name of & whether it is extensively known. The original plant of this portion does not stand more than a foot high when found growing. It is very rare in this neighbourhood; & is found only in dry sandy soil.
I fancy I have detected fossil foliage much resembling this plant in the blackish clay of the lead whence these fossil fruits came, which I have from time to time sent you.
For over two years past now, the "claim" has been closed where I obtained these botanical specimens, & so I have not been able lately to procure any more.
Feeling sure that this member of the Proteaceae — probably a Grevillea or Hakea — was rare, I thought I could not do better than send you a specimen
Yours faithfully
Chas E. Barnard. M.D.
