To Odoardo Beccari   1 January 1881

1/1/81

Let me offer my best felicitation to the new year, dear Dr Beccari. May it be to you one of happiness & health! Should you see Madame Smillie, the poor Lady, who lost her last most accomplished child in your city,1 then pray give her also my best wishes for the new year.

I have just purchased the two volumes of Signor D’Albertis on his Papuan travels, in which you give a list of his plants.2 I have received the specimens of Mimosa saligna of Labill.3 They represent two species, one probably from West Australia, if not both. I will try to make them out, when the jurors work for the intercolonial Exhibition is over.4

Wishing you every success in your great labors on the Sunda- & Papua-Flora, I remain

your regardful

Ferd. von Mueller

I shall only be able to make a return-sending of dried plants, when the Exhibition work is over.

I enjoy the friendship of the Marquis & Marchioness of Toverena here very much

Best salutations to Signor D’Albertis.
