21 February 1881
My dear Baron von Müeller
I beg you to accept my best thanks for your very kind note of the 18th1 undertaking to examine in General Botany. At the next Council Meeting I will have the pleasure of (formally) submitting your name,2 meantime with your sanction so promptly given will insert your name in the Report now being printed3 — you have rightly supposed that your presence at Ballaarat4 will not be required at the Examination: there is a small Fee, however, for setting and examining Papers
When next at Ballaarat pray favor me with a call — you will I am sure be pleased with The School
faithfully yours
W. H. Barnard

M's letter was registered at the School on 21 February (Register of letters inwards, Museum, School of Mines and Industries, Ballarat, Victoria), its contents summarized as 'Consent to examine in botany'.
Council agreed to M's appointment as examiner in botany at its quarterly meeting on 14 April 1881 (Minute book).
M was accordingly listed as the examiner in botany in the School's Annual Report for 1881 (School of Mines, Ballaarat (1882), p. 7), as he had been in the School's Annual Report for the previous year (School of Mines, Ballaarat (1881), p. 7).
Now spelled Ballarat, Vic.
