From Ferdinand von Mueller to Otto Tepper   7 July 1881

7/7/81.

7/7/81.

Your observations on Cymodocea antartica2 are instructive, dear Mr Tepper, and it is commendable for you to have observed the course of the flowering and the germination; since I have always lived far away from the places where these plants are found, the material for these interesting observations has never been accessible to me.

However, if I am to help you to explain this matter, for which I am gladly prepared without wishing to intervene independently, the safest way to attain the goal would be if you kindly will send me the material in alcohol for microscopic dissection.3 There is difficulty with the softening of such delicate parts in water after the drying of the plant. However, if you can get no more material this season, I will try what can be done with the dried.

The hybridity of Lasiopet. Tepperi4I is almost the first example of the kind among the Sterculiaceae, from which family of plants previously only hybrids between South African Mahernia were known.

Do look around diligently now for the smallest annual plants of the beginning of spring.

At last I hope soon to be able to send you a new number of the Fragmenta and the Eucalyptus atlas.5

Send me a list of those of my works which you have; perhaps I can forward something more.

Respectfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.
