To Joseph Hooker1    4 August 1881

4/8/81.

As you probably now, dear Sir Joseph, are passing the sheets of the Monocotyledoneae for the generic work2 through the press, it may be well to mention to you, that the Nipa, which has been found on two places in Queensland is in no way different from N. fruticans though Mr Bailey gave it a new name.3

I hope, that you admit no petals in Orchids, Irideae, Liliaceae &c; for if you do, then unavoidably they must also be acknowledged in Junceae, Resticaeae &c

Regardfully yr

Ferd von Mueller

MS annotation by Hooker in margin adjacent to this paragraph : noted.

M discussed Nipa fruticans in B81.08.03, p. 127 where he credited Bailey with sending him specimens collected by Neame, but did not mention any new name Bailey had coined. Bailey did not publish until much later (Bailey [1888]) a description of N. fruticans var neameana that he claimed to have recognised in 1881 'if not as a fresh species, as a marked form of the already known species'.
