To Joseph Hooker1    November 1881

Perhaps you & Bentham have not the first edit of Linné's syst. nat (of 1735).2 I find at p. 9, that he has Lens as a genus, though (of course) the name only. Still it is entitled to be mentioned thus far as generic authority3

I have quoted the first edition in my census of Austral plant-genera, now in type,4 wherever it had priority. "Sassafras" occurs also at p. 9.

I was greatly pleased with the figure of Micraira5 I subscribe to all your & Bentham's publications, Bot. Mag., Genera, icones, &c &c for my private library.
