I am sending you herewith, dear Mr Tepper, the names of your plants collected jointly with Professor Tate.1 Only very few are kept back for further observation. I congratulate you on your success, which was relatively significant, because you have moved back the known boundaries of a dozen Tasmanian plants into your Colony, so discovering two genera new for South Australia.2 This further connection of the flora of Tasmania with that of South Australia is worthy of note. The Cyperus gracilis is noteworthy on account of its occurrence there. If the regions nearer Encounter Bay were carefully investigated, they might still yield many new findings. Thirty years ago, this far southerly region was not within my reach under the difficulties of that time, which I still regret. So I am quite pleased that the field is open to you and Professor Tate. I look forward with some expectation to Professor Tate's results on Kangaroo Island,3 the vegetation of which together with the geology he took up on my advice. I have just received a very friendly letter from him.4 He is thinking of the publication of a new census of the plant species of South Australia.5 I will gladly offer every help for this, and it would be good if it could appear at the end of 1882. Until then I will still be able to work through investigating the critical species in Kempe's collection, which were laid aside during the time of the Exhibition.6
Must try to find the letter from Ascherson soon, which unfortunately is mislaid. You and he might otherwise become dissatisfied, that his observations on Cymodocea remain unpublished.7 It would have been best for him to publish his notes in Berlin. You will surely produce a paper with Professor Tate on your last excursion. At the same time there is the allurement of the novelty of a locality previously uninvestigated scientifically.
You must try to arrange it so that you also obtain the orchids and other plants of the spring on an eventual tour to Encounter Bay.
There might be two species lying hidden there among the Adenanthos; specimens of fruit and flowers for critical comparison would be very much desired.
Respectfully your
Ferd. von Mueller

Tate (1880) was supplemented by a list of cryptogams, Tate (1881), and lists of additional higher plants, e.g. Tate (1882), Tate (1882b), Tate (1883a), consolidated and extended in Tate (1889a) and with keys, distribution details and explanations of generic and specific names in a book, Tate (1990). Further supplements then appeared, e.g. Tate (1895).
