From Ferdinand von Mueller to James Barnard   17 Mar 1882

17./3./82.

The byefollowing short paper1 may be acceptable to your R. S.,2 dear Mr Barnard, especially as you have a new part of your next volume under print. Let me hope, that the commencement, now made, to elucidate the flora not only of King's Island will be followed up methodically, and that also from other unexplored regions of the Tasmanian dominions collections will come soon forward.

Regardfully

your

Ferd. von Mueller.

I remember, that a Gentleman some time ago wrote a description of King's Island for the Tasmanian journals;3 but I cannot find the copy, which I received; thus some plants may be mentioned in that report, and perhaps the highest points of elevation could be ascertained from the survey-office. Memoranda to that effect would be interesting, if appended to my present notes.4

The Papers and proceedings of the Royal Society of Tasmania for 1873 includes (p. 50) a brief description of King Island, in Bass Strait, extracted from the Tasmanian Government gazette, 31 March 1827, that may be the report to which M is referring.

No such annotations were added to M's text.
