It is possible that this letter was sent to the wrong person. No known work by M fits the description of the gift being acknowledged, while William Guilfoyle's catalogue of the plants growing in the Melbourne Botanic Garden — which, given M's continuing hostility towards Guilfoyle and his adminstration of the Garden, he is most unlikely to have sent anyway — was not published until 1883. Moreover, the comment about 'a welcome sign of life' seems inappropriate in relation to M, who had maintained regular contact with the Academy.
Carl Nicolas Berg. For this and the Clerk's name, see Berichte des Freien Deutsche Hochstiftes in Frankfurt am Main Jahrgang 1882-3 (1884), p. 88.
