From Ferdinand von Mueller to Otto Tepper   26 Apr 1882

26/4/82.

Man darf wissenschaftl.

Blüthen schon Exemplare in März?

As far as I remember, dear Mr Tepper, Cladium trifidum FvM no. 6101 had not yet been found in South Australia, because it is so easily regarded as identical to Cl. filum. Perhaps you can still add this plant to the new ones in the press. I should like to have some quite ripe seeds of this.

Your

Ferd. von Mueller.

614.2 Eleocharis multicaulis Smith, the older name of which is E. gracilis.

618 is remarkable.

This Drosera stands in the same relation to D. Whittackeri as the leafless D. squamosa to D. erythorrhiza3 in Western Australia.

Kindly observe this species closely; perhaps it germinated quickly after long dryness and heavy rain, whilst the ground was still warm from summer, and so the flowers did not form. The structure of the flowers seems to be the same as that of D. Whittackeri, unless the petals possibly are narrower. I have not seen D. Whitackeri bloom so early, beginning of April. I ask you to press a number of flowers separately opened and to pay attention to the fruit later; it may be something new and then the species could be named D. aphylla. You have the best opportunity there to compare both and thereby further light would also be thrown on D. squamosa.

How much is still to be observed was shown to me recently in the case of Marianthus and Billardiera, as I worked on them for the Census of plant species of Australia.4 Bentham has 16 species of Marianthus and six of Billardiera,5 instead of which I have only 11 of Marianthus but eight of Billardiera, although no new species were added. One should not rush into scientific investigations, if they are to be tenable.
