for the honor of the Fellowship of the Linnean Society on account of his general zeal for the advancement of the natural sciences and in consideration of his independent microscopic researches both in biomorphic science and oryctognosy. 1

The file contains a copy of Howitt’s ‘obligation’: 'I do hereby oblige myself in conformity with the Bye-laws of the Linnean-Society of London to pay to the Treasurer of the said Society, for the time being, the Annual Contribution of three Pounds, so long as I shall continue a Fellow of the said Society.' The form is signed by Howitt and is embossed with a six pence duty stamp, dated 31 August 1882.

Howitt withdrew from the Fellowship during the 1894-95 session ( Proceedings of the Linnean Society , session 1894-95, p. 11).
