From Paul Foelsche1    December 1882

ON HER MAJESTY'S SERVICE.

ON HER MAJESTY'S SERVICE .

A tuberous plant with flowers, seed and tubers.

The tubers grow to 4 inches in diameter and are good to eat. When boiled they are very similar to turnips. They grow in the soil in which they are sent.

MS is a note on an envelope annotated by M: 'Arrived January 1883', the content of which has not been found. A further note in an unknown hand identifies the MS as coming from 'Port Darwin Foelsche'. Travel time from Darwin to Melbourne was such that December 1882 is almost certainly the latest possible date on which the letter could have been sent.
