On the form, 'Qualifications' is printed vertically to the left of the space left for the details. Tate's candidature information was included in the List of Candidates for 1885 (p. 14) and 1886 (p. 13), the text unchanged and with no additional signatures; his upgrading to FLS was not mentioned.

Tate was elected as a Fellow of the Linnean Society on 6 December 1883, having solicited the upgrade in a letter to the Society dated 22 May 1883 (Linnean Society archives, BL/1/19, p. 186), apparently after Mueller, acting on advice from Hooker, suggested he do so. See M to J. Hooker, 5 May 1883, and notes thereto.

This number is not consistent with the numbers in each category enumerated below.

A paraphrase and ellision of remarks made by J. E.Tenison-Woods in his presidential address to the Annual Meeting of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, 28 January 1880, pp. 479, 485 (Proceedings of the Linnean Society of New South Wales, vol. 4 (1880)).

Robert Etheridge Sr.

Barkly added his signature later; see M to R. Tate, 29 March 1884.

The lapsed certificate for Tate could not be produced at the Royal Society Archives in November 2019, so the details are taken from the printed List of Candidates prepared annually after 1847 for the information of Council and Fellows (1884 list, p. 15). See also Home (2002), p. 312. The layout is modelled on the form of the certificates used in the period.

The certificate is dated to 1883 by reference to M to R. Tate, 7 October 1883, allowing time for the certificate to be sent to New Zealand for signature by Hector and Haast. However, the nomination did not proceed until 1884 (Home (2003), p. 72.
