From Archibald McDowall to Ferdinand von Mueller   4 Jan 1883

Queensland.

Department of Public Lands,

District Survey Office, Maryborough

4th January 1883

MEMORANDUM:

To Baron Ferd Von Mueller K.C.M.G.

Government Botanist

Melbourne Victoria

By the "Derwent" I am sending four (4) ripe cones of the Fraser Island "Coolbine" or Zamia.1 I have not yet got any of the male cones.

These are fair specimens but not extra large. I am also sending you the leaves and seed of the Fraser Island Turpentine tree. I want you to tell me the botanical name of the tree. It has been proclaimed a Eucalyptus microcorys, but I am of opinion that there must be some mistake as it looks more like Syncarpia Laurifolia, but I may be wrong.

A. M. McDowall

District Surveyor.

Eucalyptus microcorys

Syncarpia Laurifolia

Zamia

See A. McDowall to M, 6 December 1882; A. McDowall to M, 21 February 1883; and A. McDowall to M, 7 March 1883; and also B83.02.01, in which M discussed McDowall's Zamia under the name Encephalartos Douglasii.

MS found with a specimen at MEL many years ago and extracted from the folder. MS annotations by M: 'Answ 23/1/83 FvM' L(letter not found), and 'Eucalyptographia 1-7 (sent Jan 1883.)'.
