From Ferdinand von Mueller to Alphonse de Candolle   12 Jan 1883

12/1/83

The pleasing duty devolves on me, honored Sir, to express my best thanks for your generosity of sending me a copy of your important volume "l'origine des plantes cultivées".1 It is a book embracing a vast amount of research, and it is all the more valuable to us, as gift to science from you offered at a venerable age.

Oryza is doubtless indigenous to several parts of tropical Australia, and Indigofera tinctoria has been found in the virgin forests on the Endeavour-River,2 where no Indigo-plantations exist.

I was anxious to place my homage for you on public record, and trust that the expressions in which I have done this, will be pleasing to you. The proof-sheet of the dedication from my new volume "systematic Census," was forwarded by last mail.3

With deep veneration always your
