From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ralph Tate   22 Jan 1883

22/1/83

To day, dear Prof Tate, I got from you a parcel of dried plants, but no letter. As I can manage to make an hour free, I just note at once some remarks on these specimens.

Agrostis from Noarlunga & Lake George1 = large form of Agr. Solandri. I adopted that name in the Chatham Isl. Flora,2 because Agrostis Forsteri includes only 2 or 3 forms of the 8 or 9 united by me under the name of the Botanist who first of all referred this grass to its correct genus. The other Agrostis from Narracourt3 is the smallest form of the same species; many intermediate varieties occur, in which the sterile flower is more or less developed. Thus the genus Deyeuxia falls to the ground

Polypogon monspeliensis! Introduced4

Agrostis quadriseta!

6 Danthonia nervosa, J.Hk.

12 Eragrostis

10 Agropyron scabrum, Palisot

Danthonia Cape Northumberland5 = D. penicillata var. Also a small form from Dismal Swamp6 & Narracourt. One of the most variable grasses in existence.

Chloris truncata without label

3 & 4 Pappophorum commune

Exceedingly variable, as I found by my thousands of miles of walks & rides among this grass.

5 Diplachne loliiformis

1 Neurachne Munroi7

2 Triodia irritans

Cyperaceae

1, 4, 5 Scirpus, sect Isolepis.

_________

Cladium from Near Mt M'Intrye = C. Radula (new for S.A.)

Mt Graham: Schoenus

Leptorrh. panaetiodes10 = L. squamatus

Caladenia, only form of C. carnea

Veronica Anagallis; doubtless introduced like Lythrum hyssopif.11 &c. If it were a native we would find it on many places, as it easily disseminates itself.

Melaleuca from Penola = M. pustulata J.H.

5. Pultenaea

Fruit desirable.

I should like to reexamine all the Pultenaeas, but it cannot be done satisfactorily, without ripe fruit of each of them being provided

Regardfully your

Ferd von Mueller
