From Ferdinand von Mueller to Ralph Tate   13 Feb 1883

13/2/83

Collectors of plants, dear Prof Tate, do not always put their names to the labels of the specimens, and as I was not sufficiently careful in labelling separately each of the 70,000 specimens, which I sent on loan to Kew, I got in a few instances credit for collecting on places, not visited by me personally, while in far more instances others were put forward as collectors of plants on places, where I was first in the field. These minor imperfections I could not cheque,1 as the Flora Australiensis was printed in London. You ought to be very proud of your ramified scientific family connections.2 If you have still a spare copy of your Flora of Belfast,3 may I have it?

RBr's few Kang. Isl.4 plants you will of course find in the Fl. Austral.5 Baudin's expedition brought at all events Euc. cneorifolia from Kang. Isl. Mr Sealey and Mr Bannier, early settlers in S. Austr. went at different times to Kang. Island, and it was on my own special solicitations, that they brought back a few plants. So it was with Mr Henry Heuzenroeder. The principal object of Mr Waterhouse6 for visiting the isl. was to search for insects and other zool. objects. As the plants, collected by him, were not expected by him officially to be collected, they came as a result of byework of his into my Museum of dried plants. Sealey, Bannier & Heuzenroeder visited K. Isl. between 1849-1851. The 37 species are theirs, but it would take much time to make out precisely, who of these three collected respectively these plants.

Regardfully your

Ferd. von Mueller.
