From William Woolls to Ferdinand von Mueller   11 Apr 1883

My dear Baron,

I am much obliged for you valuable remarks on classification.2 My object in referring to the matter was to meet any objection that might be made. I do not think that any one here is competent to take up the question.3

I enclose two fragments of plants from the Macquarie.4 I suppose they are Salsola kali & Zostera nana, but it is said that the latter belongs exclusively to the sea-coast or estuaries. Is this really the case?

Woolls (1885), pp. 11-13 contains a discussion of classification systems, and justified the use of M's system as distinct from that in Bentham (1863-78), followed by Bailey (1883) and Moore (1884). See also Maroske (2006) for the evolution of M's classification system.

An unknown amount of text missing.

Though the signature is missing, it is clear from the handwriting, paper and address that the letter was written by Woolls. The text continues to the end of the page; it appears that a second page has been cut off.
