Esteemed Friend, I have quite particularly asked Mr C. Winnecke to solve the fate of Leichhardt and his companions during his new journey; because I imagine that their places of death really will probably lie between the Herbert, Marshall, Todd and Mulligan Rivers, therefore in the regions where he will be going. The rumour about one of the Europeans living among the Blacks in Central Australia arose more than a quarter of a century ago and I regard this even now still not as a fabrication, although the poor lost ones must have died long ago. Mr Winnecke will undoubtedly now also follow the range that culminates in Mt Powell southeast, which will give a new route of communication to the Overland Telegraph Line.1
Best greetings
